Form, surface and volume, and the space between two and three dimensions, are at the core of my work. Seriality runs through all of it: the accumulation of objects, repetition and variation, and the way single elements relate to one another within a group. Just as important are the areas that remain white, and their dialogue with everything around them.
My work moves between media, from photograph to drawing to digital painting and back to paper or canvas. Each series takes a different route, yet they keep returning to the same questions.
In my drawings, architectural structures are layered into observations of social ones. The framework appears quickly; working out the surfaces takes far longer. On paper, nothing can be undone, and there is a freedom in that.
Since 2005 I have been building an archive of symbols, collected from books, the internet and my own photographs. On the computer they become my painting material, pasty or translucent, multiplied thousands of times, every brushstroke full of information. From a distance the images appear organic and abstract; up close, their structure emerges.
Through reduction and overloading, I create a chaos that I then try to resolve: a lovingly inflationary mess.
I live and work in Cologne.
